Needle felting and mixed-media sculpture
by PJ (Pat) Floyd
I began my artistic career as a contemporary dancer/choreographer. As a result of sewing costumes I fell in love with new, vintage, and recycled textiles.
A passion for nature and my garden make up a large part of my life! Finding a way to combine these interests have been my hearts desire. Through the use of wire, wool, recycled fabric and found objects, I delight in conveying my fascination with nature. I expressed myself through dance for over half my life, Now I express myself through gardening and making these sculptures.
Married to jewelry artist Ricky Frank, I live in a two studio household in Georgia, with my husband and lovely daughter Lily (now away at college) and of course 2 birds, our Koi pond, and our two dogs Stella and Heidi.
Though no longer a performer, I continue to tell stories using the human figure. I use wire, wool, and fabric to craft my needle-felted choreography. These materials provide a softness and intimacy that I don't find in other materials. The wool feels alive to me and this enables me to bring life into my sculpted world of movement and grace.
